2019 CAFPNA Annual Meeting Summary

The 2019 annual meeting for the Chinese Association for Food Protection in North American (CAFPNA) was hold on July 22 during IAFP annual meeting at Louisville KY conventional center. We had 67 attendees including 43 new and 24 existing members, from North America and China.

Our current president, Zengxin “Scott” Li, opened the section with association history brief and updates of affiliate activities from 2018 to 2019. IAFP executive board Vice President Dr. Ruth Petran followed with a warm welcome and appreciation of CAFPNA past year accomplishment, she encouraged all participants to continue their involvement in IAFP.  Dr. Zhinong Yan from Walmart then provided a great presentation regarding technology innovation on supply chain, contains challenge with current farm to table supply chain in China, and technology upgrade such as block chain could enhance traceability in such system. Next is a summary of our students’ activities in 2018-2019, presented by student committee chair: Zeyan Zhong from McGill University and Hongye Wang from Clemson University. Thanks to our generous financial contributions from our members, this year we had a new section for student presentation competition, CAFPNA current president elect, Dr. Wen Zou from FDA, hosted the events which there were four students entering in this rapid-fire style competition. Their presentation and award are listed below:

1st place: Key Factors Influencing Thermal Resistance of Bacterial Pathogens in Low-Moisture Foods, Ren Yang, Washington State University;

2nd place: Inactivation of Salmonella enterica and Enterococcus faecium in Cumin Seeds Using Gaseous Ethylene Oxide, Long Chen, University of Nebraska-Lincoln;

3rd place: Behavior of Shiga Toxin Producing Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Listeria monocyotgenes on Dried Apricots Made with and without Sulfur Dioxide, Zhuosheng Liu, University of California Davis

                  Food Allergy or food intolerance? Exploring food safety practices among campus food service employees, Soojin Lee, University of Missouri-Columbia
